The Importance of Picture Books

By Leave a Comment

Why Are Picture Books Important?

The importance of picture books has so many beneficial attributes for a child to embrace at an early age.

Picture books for me as a child were always the gateway for me to dream and imagine that roller coaster ride filled with fun and excitement.

I can remember having my first picture book in my hand. It became my first interactions with imaginary characters. No matter how bored that I was being at school or at home, reading picture books gave my magical world a purpose to read more on a daily basis.

Picture Books Introduces Word Concepts Of Reading To Children

Story books with pictures helped me to learn how to read faster. My eyes became a target for any children book that I read first on my own. I would first look at the pictures in any book to imagine what the story or plot was all about in magical world.

Then, I would go back to story on the page to make an attempt to read the text just to see if I was close enough to truth of what I just read in accordance on the same page.

This how some kids learn how to read via words and languages. Any words that I did not know, my parents would show me how to look up words in a dictionary to find the answer to my word detective mind.

Reading became my escape goat to reduce my lack of boredom at home. That’s right young folks! Back in my day, we did not have Xbox or Playstations. All we had was our creativity, imagination, and books. LOL

Picture Books Are Great Conductors For Conversations

Even though I enjoyed reading picture books on my own, I really enjoyed it better when mother read to me. She would explain to me what the characters in the story were feeling. This helped me out tremendously.

I was able to visualize story plots in my head regarding what was about to happen next in the story, meaning of new words that explained the character’s emotions, and how I could relate to what was going on all at once. I would have to say that it made me feel closer to mom because she made things magical and reading fun.

importance of picture books

Conversations between young and adult readers are encouraged by picture books. While some youngsters love reading picture books on their own, my parents were my theatrical stage during the day or at night.

Reading aloud a picture book sparked discussions between my parents and I about what’s going on in the story, how the characters are feeling, word meanings, and how I interpret what is going on as it relates to me.

Amazing books kids love!

The importance of picture books being read to me by my parents gave me joy and excitement in my life as a kid.

Now you know why picture books in general are very important in the development of children’s minds. These books will always turn attentive listeners into readers. I can contest to this revelation because my parents read to me every day.

Even in my adult life, the joys of reading books made me an author of my own children’s book , “BENZO”.  Here is a snippet of what my children’s book is about listed below. Yes, this is a shameless plug moment. LOL

By Leave a Comment

Yes! I am back with new children’s book editing tips and the progress of my book.  In my previous post regarding publishing my first children’s book, I gave you tips on why it was important to know your audience and age group.

In this post, I will focus on the editing aspect of writing this book.

You guys might not know that I am going to have “BENZO” in 8 different languages Yabba Dabba Doo!

Therefore, having my book edited by professionals is a plus.

Completed Manuscripts

As a self published author, please take the time to edit your books. I am proud to say that all of my children’s book translations were all completed by professors at my university.

That’s right folks. I have professionals in my corner that make this book a gem.

As a soon to be self published author, it was my duty to make sure that this book was error free from typographical and grammatical mistakes.

Microsoft Word and spell check is only the first line of defense. Please do yourself a favor and hire a professional.

There is nothing more frustrating than a book with lots of typos and bad sentence grammar.

Publishing My First Children’s Book

The Process Begins

That’s right folks! I am publishing my first children’s book. I will be sharing my process with you as I get ready to make my children’s book dream a reality.

My First Children’s BookCover

I also wanted to make this process of publishing my first children’s book as fun as possible too.

Just like any other indie author waiting to publish their children’s book, the process itself can be a little bit overwhelming as well.

However, I am determined to make my children’s book a reality. The main reason behind my determination is my kids.

I write with a purpose to make sure that they understand that reading is fun. My kids are my biggest fans and inspiration.

Therefore, when they asked me if I could create a children’s picture book, how could I say no.

That was all the motivation I needed to make this project a priority.

I didn’t have the slightest clue where to begin or start. I knew that I could not let them down.

However, I knew that CONTENT IS KING. I was ready for the challenge to make this project fun too.

I just knew that I had to figure out what I was going to be writing about for my children to enjoy this picture book.

Know Your Audience

Knowing your audience whom you will be writing for is the first big step to writing a successful children’s book.

Your book can not be for all age groups of children. It will be impossible to appeal or appeased all the masses at the same time.

Besides children of all different ages do not have the same attention span or spectrum to gravitate towards your picture book.

Defining your audience is very vital in writing a successful children’s book. My children’s book “BENZO” is definitely for age groups of 4 – 8 year olds.

Creating this book for this age range or spectrum is perfect for me.

It is my comfort level for creating the perfect bedtime story theme which kids can relate to and enjoy at the same time.

Choosing a Parallel Theme

My children’s book has a relatable theme that centers on amusement parks and carnival prizes.  My children and I always enjoyed going to amusement parks.

Spending quality time together while winning carnival prizes made being a DAD awesome!

When kids can visually relate to your children’s book, they will want to read more and more.

The reason for this is that they can see themselves in your storylines or character plots.

Trust me when I tell you this because my children can remember every memorable moment at these amusement parks.

They are extremely excited that I am publishing my first children’s book, “BENZO” which is in production and ME too.
